Updated: Jan 23

Our guest on Thursday, January 23 is author and journalist Melissa Ludtke. We are thrilled that Melissa will be joining us for Episode 22 of “Shining Light on Shadows: A Candid Conversation About Mental Health.” The title of the episode is “Keeping Quiet About Clinical Depression.”

She will share, for the first time, how her struggle with clinical depression led her to seek in-patient treatment and therapy. It’s not just a question of sharing her story publicly. She told us she’s barely shared it privately as well. We are honored that she chose to share her story with us and our audience.

Please join us Thursday January 23 at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT / 4 p.m. PT. If you can’t watch the live show feel free to watch the recording on the same links.

Programming Note: The show airs the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. On Feb. 13, our guest will be Tim Fielder. He’ll share his experience with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a psychotherapy that helps people process traumatic memories and other distressing experiences.

You can watch the recording on this website

Melissa wrote “On Our Own: Unmarried Motherhood in America,” in the 1990s. In doing this, she found it difficult to avoid her own strong desire to be a mother, even if it meant doing it on her own. As she talked with other unwed women about their decisions and lives as mothers, she wrestled with her own emotions.

This will be the second time I’ve interviewed Melissa. She was a guest on Sree’s Sunday #NYTReadalong. I’m the Executive Producer and Guest Host. Sree and I talked with her about “Locker Room Talk: A Woman's Struggle to Get Inside,” about her 1978 lawsuit against Major League Baseball to secure access to locker rooms so she could do her job as a reporter.

Dawn and I launched this twice a month show (the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month) in order to help reduce the stigma associated with mental health. Thank you for being part of our community.

We are proud to be starting Year 2 of the show. If you are interested in being a guest on the show or know someone who might be interested, please let us know. We’re looking for people who would be willing to share their story, advocates and people who work in the field of mental health.

We hope you can watch the show and share your own thoughts in the comments.

“Shining Light on Shadows: A Candid Conversation About Mental Health” is produced by Digimentors on a pro bono basis.
