What do you know about Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing or EMDR? Our guest is Tim Fielder, a visual Afrofuturist and graphic novelist. You might know him as the illustrator of The Graphic History of Hip Hop. He is joining Ep. 23 of “Shining Light on Shadows: A Candid Conversation About Mental Health” to talk about how EMDR helped him several years ago and how he is working to re-start the therapy.
He will be sharing his story for the first time.
Please join us Thursday February 13 at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT / 4 p.m. PT. If you can’t watch the live show feel free to watch the recording on the same links.
Programming Note: The show airs the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. On Feb. 27, we will do a follow-up episode focusing on EMDR. Dawn Helmrich, who is out of town this week, will be back. She will share her experience with EMDR. You won’t want to miss it.
You can watch the live show or recording on this website

Many years ago Tim engaged in therapy that employed lots of talk therapy and journaling. Oftentimes, the talk therapy was with mixed results as he learned that therapy, like exercise, is largely based on the quality of your ‘coach’ and your level of commitment.
In hindsight, Tim says his therapy helped him cope with a significantly traumatic period in his life. When he felt he had gotten all he could out of talk therapy, he was referred to an EMDR specialist. It changed his life. It transformed his outlook, led him to his present marriage, a fairly healthy relationship with his now adult children, and a complete turnaround in his career as an artist.
Dawn and I launched this twice a month show (the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month) in order to help reduce the stigma associated with mental health. Thank you for being part of our community.
We are proud to be in Year 2 of the show. If you are interested in being a guest on the show or know someone who might be interested, please let us know. We’re looking for people who would be willing to share their story, advocates and people who work in the field of mental health.
We hope you can watch the show and share your own thoughts in the comments.
